Nowadays if we mention self-defense, we immediately think of karate, taekwondo, kick boxing, as well as in some countries, weapons for self-protection. I always believe true self-defense isn't necessarily about getting physical. In fact, when one start fighting, we'll be faced in the more compromising position particularly if the possibilities are against us.

Why MMA Equipment
If you are considering Muay Thai gear for training purposes, you may want to consider MMA equipment instead. It does not matter if you're studying Krav Maga, Kick Boxing, Judo, Karate or Jiu Jitsu the world of ufc have provided us big benefits. The main point to wear protective clothing is indeed we can train at full intensity. This will make your struggle more real and make people greater fighters.

Most self-defense specialists recommend the application of open-hand strikes (chops, palms, gouging, etc.) over using closed fists. Their logic is such hand positions are less at risk of injury from striking an unintended target (e.g. a skull rather than a nose), knowning that oftentimes, they're able to cause greater damage (e.g. a chop rather than a punch on the throat).

The techniques are split up into major techniques or mae mai and minor technique or luk mai but just about all base on technique human body. All Muay Thai training techniques use punching or chok (straight/cross, hook, uppercut and jab but can also include some western boxing punches), elbow or ti sok (horizontal, diagonal-downward, diagonal-upwards, downward, upward, flying and backward-spinning), kicking or te (straight kick, roundhouse kick, diagonal kick, jump kick, etc.), knee or ti khao (straight knee strike, jumping knee strike, flying knee strike, etc.) and foot-thrust or thip (a defensive technique employed to block another panic attack). Thai clinch technique or chap kho can be used exclusively in Thai boxing.

Such intense training and discipline just isn't for anyone but be assured there are several venues for the island which you could watch well trained athletes compete inside ring. The biggest Muay Thai stadium in Phuket is Bangla based in the party capital of Patong. You can get a ticket to find out the boxing for approximately 600 baht with bouts starting around 9 inside the evening and events lasting from couple of hours onwards. You really can't check out Thailand without watching a Muay Thai fight and Phuket is a good introduction zone towards the sport. As Thailand's national sport will even see it all over magazines, newspapers and television and if you are looking for an authentic approach to immerse yourself in Thai culture you cannot make a mistake while using ancient art of Muay Thai.
