We all want strong, healthy teeth but how often do we pay attention to our gums and the soft tissue in our mouths? If you want to know how to get healthy gums, read on. The health of your teeth depends on strong gums to provide a good foundation so it is essential that your gums get as much attention and care as the rest of the mouth.

In short, healthy gums rely on three primary factors: a healthy diet, a good dental hygiene routine and regular visits to your dentist. Diet plays a role because you need strong tissues to form as well as immunity to fight off infection and heal.

Good hygiene habits are important to ensure that plaque is removed from the teeth on a daily basis, and to ensure that gum disease does not develop, but it is regular dental check-ups that will ensure your teeth are free of tartar and monitor your gums for any early signs of gum disease.

Tips For Healthy Gums
Healthy gums are firm and strong. They are pink in colour. They do not bleed and they fit securely around the teeth to keep them in position.

How do you know if you have gum disease?
More often than not gum disease, also known as gingivitis, can present without any symptoms but early warning sings include red, swollen or tender gums and gums that bleed easily when flossing or brushing.

In the majority of cases of mild gum disease, a visit to the dentist will identify the warning signs and address the problem. If you miss a visit though, the problem runs the risk of becoming worse and developing into periodontitis. When plaque is not removed it starts to release toxins and hardens into a substance called tartar.

If gingivitis is not managed it can develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis affects the fibres and bones that hold your teeth in position. A pocket forms under your gum line, where food particles and bacteria can become trapped.

When periodontitis advances to its final stage the bone and supporting fibres are affected and weakened. This can cause your teeth to become loose or to drift out of their position as the gums separate from the teeth. This requires some intensive dental intervention to correct.

How Do You Keep Your Gums Strong And Healthy?
Here are our top tips for healthy gums:

Follow a healthy diet
Eating a diet that is rich in calcium and a variety of vitamins and minerals is essential. It is even more important if you know you have bone loss or if you have had radiation treatment to help your gums repair. Avoid foods that are high in sugar.

Quit smoking
Smoking introduces more bacteria into your mouth and can negatively impact on um health. It also impedes your body’s ability to fight off disease and infection, or to heal itself when you have had an infection or surgery.

You must brush twice a day and floss daily to keep your gums and teeth clean. It is important to brush at a 45-degree angle to the gum line to ensure that any food particles and other debris is removed.

Visit your dentist regularly
Regular check-ups will detect any problems early on and early intervention is important because gingivitis can develop into periodontitis very rapidly. Your dentist will check your teeth and soft tissues on every visit and alert you to any problems sooner rather than later.
