Trump Organization is subpoenaed by Manhattan prosecutors

Prosecutors in Manhattan have subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents related to an alleged hush payment to former adult-film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election, it has been reported.

220px-Tabaco1.jpgThe subpoena are for documents from the company, which is owned by the president and managed by his sons, and relate to the $130,000 payment to his ex lawyer Michael Cohen. 

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, alleges she had an affair with Trump, who has repeatedly denied such claims.

The inquiry from the Manhattan district attorney's office is investigating whether any senior executives at the company filed false business records about the hush money, which would be a state crime, the WSJ reported.  

The district attorney's office also subpoenaed American Media Inc. the publisher of the National Enquirer, over allegations of a second payment arranged by Cohen to another former Playboy model who claims she had an affair with Trump.

Cohen, pleaded guilty last year to campaign finance violations in connection with the hush money case and is now serving time in prison.

Share In August 2018, Trump's former lawyer pleaded guilty to federal charges involving campaign-finance violations related to the hush payments, allegedly arranged at the behest of Trump.   

Those payments included sending checks to Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal to keep quiet about their alleged trysts with the president. 

He began a three-year prison sentence in May. 

The subpoenas from Cyrus Vance Jr., Manhattan's DA, come just weeks after the Trump Organization had appeared to fend off federal scrutiny of the same payments.

An attorney for the Trump Organization, Marc Mukasey, called the investigation a 'political hit job.' 

In a statement, he said, 'It's just harassment of the president, his family, and his business, using subpoenas and leaks as weapons. We will respond as appropriate,' the Journal reported.
