It’s not necessary to undergo wisdom teeth extraction if all 4 of your third molars are correctly aligned in your mouth. However if they are impacted, and/or cause crowding, or are causing pain, then your dentist should recommend wisdom teeth removal.

A toothy fact about wisdom teeth
Did you know that wisdom teeth initially helped our human ancestors to grind down plant tissue? However since the advent of agriculture leading to a softer vegetable and meat-based human diet, wisdom teeth have been practically made redundant. Add to this the fact that the changes in diet resulted in the anatomical reshaping of our jaws, and it’s easy to see why many people simply don’t have enough room for their wisdom teeth to grow properly.

Now in the 21st century it’s thought that somewhere between 60% and 80% of the population have one or more wisdom teeth taken out. So don’t worry, if you’ve been told you need wisdom teeth extraction, you’re certainly not alone!

Here at Ava Maria Dental we’ve assisted patients with many wisdom tooth removals over the years and for most people, wisdom teeth extraction is done when they fall somewhere between the ages of 15 and 23. This is because once the root structure of the tooth is fully developed, complications can occur later in life. These include:

Infection
Cyst formation
Overcrowding
Damage to adjacent teeth
Removing wisdom teeth before they are fully developed eradicates these problems and gives your remaining teeth the best change of success.

Okay, so if you’re in the majority and need wisdom teeth extraction what exactly can you expect?

In the vast majority of cases people prefer to be asleep when they have their wisdom teeth removed so surgery is carried out at the local hospital. But don’t worry because you’re in safe hands as you’ll be with an experienced surgeon.

On the day of the surgery if you’re having a general anaesthetic you’ll need to ensure that you have nothing to eat for at least 8 hours prior to surgery, but preferably longer. The reason is that having anything in your stomach may increase the risk of anaesthetic complications. The local hospital may also ask you to take some medication along with a small sip of water. This will help minimise any post-operative swelling or pain.

When the day arrives, the local hospital will administer the anaesthetic and when you awake some 30-90 minutes later, you’ll be one to four teeth less.

All good so far, but what about pain after wisdom teeth extraction?
Once the anesthetic wears off you may feel some slight aching at the extraction site/s but this can normally be brought under quick control using over-the-counter pain killers. Also try to avoid hot food right away. Instead if you are hungry, we recommend a milkshake or some type of cold soft food.

Normal healing after tooth extraction takes on average 3-7 days but the length of recovery will often depend on how badly the wisdom teeth had impacted and how many wisdom teeth have been pulled. Usually by about the 14th day patients are pretty much back to normal. If in the interim you do experience slight facial swelling then a cold compress can be used to reduce it.
