El presente artículo da cuenta de las nociones principales y significado que tiene la Mesa de Santiago, Chile, 1972. De sus resoluciones se extrae lo más sustancial e ilustrativo del giro o cambio en la imagen y compresión de los museos en América Latina, en cuanto entidades al servicio de la comunidad, cuya función social es relevante y a la que debe acceder el amplio público. Es un hito de la nueva museología con repercusiones internacionales. A ello sigue la descripción de la formación del museo de la Villa Cultural Huilquilemu, desde 1975, encarnándose el nuevo espíritu dado por la Mesa de Santiago. Queda así de manifiesto el carácter participativo de la comunidad en la gestación del museo de la Universidad Católica, su rol social y de conciencia, así como de memoria patrimonial en la región del Maule y el país. Abstract

The present article reports the principal notions and significance that has the Round Table of Santiago, Chile, 1972. From its resolutions, we extracted the most substantial and illustrative part of the turn or change in the image and comprehension of the museums in Latin America as entities at the service of the community, whose social function is relevant and must be accessible to a wide public. It is a milestone of the new museology with international repercussions. The description of the formation of the Villa Cultural Huilquilemu museum since 1975 follows, embodying the new spirit given by the Round Table of Santiago. The participative character of the community in the gestation of the museum of the Catholic University, its social and conscience role, remain manifest, as well as the patrimonial memory in the Maule region and in the country. It is meant to be so with all due willingness.
